COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BS101 New Testament Survey (3 credits)
This course is designed to offer an overview of the composition and content of the New Testament. It highlights the historical, social, economic and religious background out of which Christianity arose. This course examines the major themes of the New Testament and offers the participants a practical and contemporary understanding of God’s plan and purposes for His end-time Church.

BS103: Old Testament Survey 2 (3 credits)
This course covers the second half of the Old Testament - Wisdom books, Major Prophetic Books and Minor Prophetic Books. It gives an overview and examines the main themes of each book. Participants not only learn the historical and cultural background of these books but also how to transfer principles from the wisdom and prophetic books to present day living.

BS104 Principles of Bible Study (3 credits)
The Bible is the richest and most exciting book in the world and the Christians' most important resource. This course assists participants to develop fundamental skills in the observation, interpretation and application of the Bible. It offers a methodical approach to Bible study in which participants are equipped with necessary attitudes and tools to study the Holy Scriptures. An intensive inductive study is made of a selected passage of Scripture.

TH102 Christian Ethics (3 credits)
This course teaches theological and biblical foundations which determine the formation of moral decision-making and shapes the Christian's personal lifestyle in the light of the Kingdom. Selected contemporary moral issues will be examined in the light of biblical teachings. The course will include an overview of the Bible's call to the church to be mobilised in addressing crucial social and ethical issues which affect the whole nation and the world.

EM101 Tentmaking and Church Planting (3 credits)
The first part of this course examines the biblical and missiological definition of tentmaking which takes its name from the Apostle Paul who was a self-supporting missionary through this profession. It presents the views and strategies of various missions leaders regarding this “bi-vocational approach.” The second part is a study of the theological and biblical principles that undergird the Great Commission and the viable strategies and methods that operationalise it. This theological and conceptual framework forms the basis for the formulation of policies for global ministry, outreach practices and overseas ministries and missionary care.

TH101 The Christian Faith (3 credits)
This course deals with the fundamental question: "What is Theology?" It gives participants a basic understanding of the doctrines of Scripture, God, man, sin, Christ, the Holy Spirit, the church, and the end times. Emphasis will be placed on the application of doctrines to the level of the persons in the church and to practical Christian living.

TH103 Introduction to Church History (3 credits)
This course surveys the key historical movements and people in the history of the Church. Participants are acquainted with the basic history of the early Christians, the Medieval Catholic Church, the Reformation, revival movements and major church movements. Participants will discover how to relate historical renewals to present-day concerns in the Church and world.

If you are interested to sign up for any of our courses, please follow the following steps:

BY NETS/ CASH

(1) Go to the payment counter at Nexus Reception. Obtain the NETS payment card from the counter and fill in your particulars.

(2) Under the ‘Others’ blank, write down the name of the Hope Sem course/s you are registering. For example:

* Others: Christian Ethics (Hope Sem course) S$30
OR
* Others: Christian Ethics & Introduction to Church History (Hope Sem course) S$60

(3) Upon receiving your receipt, jot down the receipt number (it is the ‘trans’ numbers found at the top right corner of your receipt. E.g. ‘Trans: 121002853’) so that you can complete the online form below.

(4) Thereafter, staple the receipt with the NETS payment card and drop them into the white drop-in box next to the payment counter.

(5) Lastly fill up the online registration form found below. Please remember to fill in your receipt number as incomplete registration form will not be processed.

BY CHEQUE

(1) Make the cheque payment to 'Hope Church (S)'. Write your name, contact number & course/s you are registering at the back of the cheque.

(2) Put the cheque in an envelope (attention it to 'Choon Yam/Hope Sem') and either drop it into the white drop-in box at the NETS counter at Nexus Reception or mail it to 'Hope Seminary, 412 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 427637'.

Hope Seminary was birthed in 2004 to equip leaders and members with experience, knowledge and skills for personal development and ministry enhancement. To date 429 students have benefitted from the many courses offered through the years.

HopeSem is part of Hope Church (Singapore) as its equipping centre for global church; where experience, knowledge and skills learnt can be applied and honed in the environment of Hope Church (Singapore) and beyond.


ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES

Each certificate programme is designed and developed through combining various courses from 3 academics tracks: Biblical Studies (BS), Theological and Historical Studies (TH), and Evangelism and Missions (EM). 5 similar core courses are offered in these 2 certificate programmes.

Each course carriers 3 credits. Each credit is 7 hours. In total each course comprises of 18 classroom hours and 3 out-of-classroom hours.

The courses would be rotated through the trimesters.


Certificate in Global Christian Studies (18 credits)

Certificate in Global Christian Studies is for people who desire to engage in a short programme in biblical and related studies. The programme aims to provide personal enrichment and Christian life development.

Certificate in Global Christian Ministry (21 credits)

Certificate in Global Christian Ministry is for people who desire to engage in a short programme in biblical studies and practical aspects of the Christian faith. The programme aims to enrich the participants’ life and equip them for pastoral and church ministries.

BS101 New Testament Survey (3 credits)
This course is designed to offer an overview of the composition and content of the New Testament. It highlights the historical, social, economic and religious background out of which Christianity arose. This course examines the major themes of the New Testament and offers the participants a practical and contemporary understanding of God’s plan and purposes for His end-time Church.

BS102 Old Testament Survey 1 (3 credits)
This course covers the canonisation, preservation and basic principles of interpreting Old Testament. Participants will learn the first 17 books - the Pentateuch and the Historical books of the Old Testament. It includes the study of major themes, historical, geographical, and cultural background; thus providing an essential foundation for interpreting and understanding the Old Testament and offering a practical and contemporary understanding of God’s redemptive plan and purposes for His Church and the world.

BS103: Old Testament Survey 2 (3 credits)

Why HopeSem …

What is the benefit of HopeSem as compared to other theological institutions?
We strongly encourage all our church members to seek biblical and lifelong learning, be it in-house or from credible external institutions. Like all biblical institutions, we seek to help students build and live out sound and biblical theology; develop Christian disciplines and build Christian character.

There are certain benefits though that are only unique to HopeSem:
Instruction and teachings undergirded by our church vision and philosophy
Practical application to current ministry environment
Global and missions focus
Learning from leaders who are experienced in the nuts and bolts of local (and at times global) ministries coupled with theological foundation

HopeSem courses are too long – it’s difficult to commit the time
There’s good news! To enable more to benefit from HopeSem and to offer better learning, the certificate programmes are now undergoing revision. The course workload would be reduced and 2 certificate programmes would now be offered (the Certificate in Church Planters’ Training is moved to Global Track).

With this new development, it would be possible for students to graduate with a certificate within 3 or 4 trimesters when they undertake 2 courses per trimester.

Be amongst the first to graduate with Certificate in Global Christian Studies and/or Certificate in Global Christian Ministry in 2008! Thus, you would set the example as avid learners and enthusiasts in growing your Christian faith.

Is HopeSem only for members?
No, leaders are in fact strongly welcomed too. This is especially so for leaders who desire to build a more solid biblical and theological foundation. Think of it this way, participating in a 3-hour per week HopeSem course for 6 weeks (the new schedule) is equivalent to doing a personal Bible study weekly. In fact, the discipline and extensive learning might give greater yields than imagined.

Leaders need to relearn and learn new knowledge and skills. HopeSem is an avenue for you to do that.
